Reference Bar

The Reference Bar is accessed by the Reference Bar button on the Main Tools panel.  The Reference Bar provides quick access to online references.  Access to the world wide web is required by your computer in order to use the reference bar.  All reference content is displayed in the default web browser.

Lookup Target:  Enter the word to be looked up in the online references.  Typing in a target word to be looked up is only necessary if the word is not already in the current document.  Click on the arrow on the right side of the box to select a word that has already been looked up.  The reference buttons will only lookup the target word in the Lookup Target box if that box has input focus.  Otherwise, the reference buttons will lookup whatever word the caret is positioned on in the current document.

Dictionary:  Looks up the target word at the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary web site.  The Merriam-Webster Online home page is accessed if no target word is specified.

If the
WordWeb dictionary is installed Jarte will automatically detect and use it when the Dictionary button is clicked. In this case, the WordWeb dictionary is substituted for the Merriam-Webster Online dictionary.

Thesaurus:  Looks up the target word at the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Thesaurus web site.  The Merriam-Webster Online home page is accessed if no target word is specified.

If the
WordWeb thesaurus is installed Jarte will automatically detect and use it when the Thesaurus button is clicked. In this case, the WordWeb thesaurus is substituted for the Merriam-Webster Online thesaurus.

Encyclopedia:  Looks up the target word at the Encyclopedia Britannica web site.  The Encyclopedia Britannica home page is accessed if no target word is specified.

More Links:  Displays a popup menu which provides access to the Guide to Grammar & Writing web site and the Bartleby's Quotations web site.

Jarte Plus allows you to add your own web links to the More Links popup menu and to redefine the behavior of the Reference Bar buttons.

Close:  Closes the Reference Bar.
