The Windows RTF Editing Engine

Background

Jarte uses the same Windows RTF (rich text format) editing engine as WordPad. This helps ensure Jarte is a reliable word processor since it is built using the same time tested editing engine used by millions of PC users everyday. The editing engine is implemented by file RICHED20.DLL and is normally located in one the Windows system folders (e.g., C:\Windows\System). Jarte requires version 2.0 of the Windows RTF editing engine which is built into all versions of Windows except for early copies of Windows 95. Some of Jarte's features require version 3.0 of the editing engine.

Note: You can check the version of the RTF editing engine installed on your computer by clicking the System Information button on Jarte's About panel. The editing engine version number is shown on the last line of the System Information window.

Version 3.0

The file that implements version 3.0 of the editing engine is still named RICHED20.DLL. Although the version 3.0 editing engine functions safely if placed in earlier versions of Windows, it is currently only available in Windows XP, some copies of Windows 2000, and on computers which have installed certain Microsoft products.

Version 4.0

As of this writing, version 4.0 of the Windows RTF editing engine is the latest version. This version is now found on most recent computers with Windows XP. The current version of Jarte does not make use of any features specific to the version 4.0 editing engine.
